“Gallipoli: Crucible of Nations” @ The MacAruthur Memorial

"Gallipoli: Crucible of Nations" @ The MacAruthur Memorial | Norfolk | Virginia | United States

2015 marks the 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli. The Allied effort to capture the Dardanelles during World War I was a special project of future British PM Winston Churchill. This “out of the box” idea was supposed to break the stalemate of the Western Front, alleviate the pressure on Imperial Russia, and destroy the power of the Ottoman Empire. As they sailed towards Gallipoli, some of the Allied troops considered themselves the luckiest young men in the war. Why fight a war in mud and filth in Europe, when you could fight near the plains of ancient Troy? Despite this enthusiasm however, Gallipoli proved a costly Allied failure. Troops from Australia and New Zealand suffered enormous casualties on the peninsula. From this crucible of sacrifice however, three nations emerged. Join the Norfolk Historical Society for a presentation on Gallipoli by Amanda Williams of the MacArthur Memorial. This event is free and open to the public.
