Lunchtime Lecture: "The Star-Spangled City - Baltimore and the First World War" @ The Maryland War Memorial Building | Baltimore | Maryland | United States

Sponsored by the Western Front Association East Coast Branch, this is the second of its World War 1 Centennial Lecture Series.

In September 1914, Baltimore was focused on the centennial of the “Star Spangled Banner” and the 1814 Battle of Baltimore.  As a vibrant port city with numerous ties to Europe, however, Baltimore would be impacted by the outbreak of the First World War and its citizens would be divided in their support for the Allied and Central Powers.  What was Baltimore like culturally and economically in 1914, what were the attitudes of Baltimoreans to the war in Europe and how would these characteristics change by the time of the Armistice in 1918?  These and other questions will be addressed.

Feel free to bring your “brown bag” lunch and join us for this free public lecture at the historic Maryland War Memorial Building.  An optional guided tour of the building will be offered following the lecture.
